When my daughters were at the “just walking” stage, it was a very dangerous age. They could walk and climb. They could climb up on a chair, but they didn’t know how to get down from the chair without a loud thump, sometimes on their head. If I found myself snoozing, I could be awakened with a startling thump and cry!
“For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the Lord, and He ponders all his paths. The iniquities of the wicked ensnare him, and he is held fast in the cords of his sin. He dies for lack of discipline, and because of his great folly he is led astray.” (Proverbs 5:21–23, ESV)
I am thankful that we have a Heavenly Father who never sleeps, but He is always watching over us and protecting us from a crash and a fall. As we make our way to the summit of His presence, His eye is forever on us and His hand is never far from helping us. He is always watching our foothold and handholds as we climb on this journey toward His pleasure, and we must make our decisions based upon God’s penetrating gaze.
1. God cares about what we do.
Like a loving father, God doesn’t want anything bad to happen to His children. He cares about us, even in the details of our lives. He is compassionately concerned about our decisions. He wants the very best in life for us. So He watches. The Hebrew literally says, “For before the eyes of the Lord the journey of man.” He is watching us along our journey. Each step. Each decision.
But God doesn’t end His activity with a passive viewing. Sometimes we watch a play or television show with only a fleeting interest as a casual observer. God doesn’t watch us like that. He ponders the trail we are following. He is weighing the choices we make, whether good or bad. The verb in the Hebrew also means that He is smoothing out the path before us so that we will have joy in our journey. In other words, God is at work to lead our steps along a trail that is smoothed by His hand so that we will find the best of life. He watches us because He cares about what we do.
2. What we do can hurt us.
The track we are following is like the rail of a train. Once the train is on a rail, it is set for the destination. When God ponders our track, He understands which tracks will lead to our blessing and which ones will lead to our pain. God weighs the tracks we are on because He knows that our choices can hurt us. We can wrap up in the cords of sin and strangle the life out of our soul. If we don’t get off this track of sin, we will eventually find ourselves plummeting off a great crevice on our journey. We will wake up and find our lives so far off course, that we won’t know how to get back on track. So God watches and ponders so that He can lead us on to the best of life. He instructs us in the way that we should go. He calls us to set our feet upon the smooth path that He has laid for us.
Today, will you allow God to set your feet upon a path that leads to the best of life in His presence? Will you follow His lead and step up on the rail of blessing that He has laid for you? Or will you remain entrenched in the rut of sin that will lead to devastation and destruction?
O Father, thank You for watching my journey and pondering my path. Thank You for never sleeping while I make decisions today. Help me to follow the path that You have set for me to follow. Please don’t let me get off Your track. Please don’t let me stay entangled in the trench of folly that leads to a strangled soul, far from Your presence and power. Watch me, today, Lord, and help me walk along the journey that leads me ever closer to the Summit of Your presence.
